In 1728, William
Byrd looked out over the expansive canebrakes that
covered the marshes of southeastern Virginia and
northeastern North Carolina and proclaimed them a "Green
Sea." This area includes several special preserves along
the gently flowing blackwater rivers in Virginia, the
focus of our tour. These exceptional ecosystems being
protected by The Nature Conservancy are but a small
fraction of what William Byrd originally described, but
important nonetheless to the overall health and well
being of the natural communities in the Green Sea
program area.
Adventure Damascus
Tours and The Nature Conservancy spent three days,
exploring by kayak, the Northwest River, the North
Landing River, and Lake Drummond in the Great Dismal
Swamp. Our expert interpreters and professional guides
designed a tour that allowed our days to be spent
learning, seeing and experiencing the most biodiverse
area of Virginia east of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
These are some images from that tour.
