Background Information on the New River Trail

We'll start at the trailhead in Galax, Virginia and meander downstream about 30 miles along the river to Foster Falls and the headquarters of the New River Trail State Park. We'll pass over two long, high trestles over the New River and go through two tunnels on this route. We'll enjoy spectacular views of the river along the way to keep us company and be watchful for deer, birds of prey, wildflowers and wild raspberries!

The New River Trail follows the old railroad bed along the banks of one of the oldest rivers in the world and one of the few that flow from south to north. Tunnels, beautiful stretches of river-side riding, remarkable cliffs, wildlife watching, historicA View of the New River landmarks and a gentle downhill grade make this a most enjoyable day of biking. We'll have the shuttle van at the half-way point with lots of cold drinks and for those who want to ride a bit less or leave their lunch in the van. This is a trip you wont want to miss!

Everybody is responsible for providing his or her own lunch today.

Background Information on The Virginia Creeper Trail

Come ride what has been described as the prettiest Rail-Trail in the country. Once an active railway line passing through the rugged mountains, the Virginia Creeper Trail comes by this reputation easily. Pass over forty-seven trestles crossing meandering mountain streams filled with trout and other interesting creatures. Observe the cliffs and forest along with the bird life, wildflowers and outstanding natural scenery.

We'll shuttle from Damascus to Whitetop Station then ride from the highest point on the Creeper all the way to Abingdon. We'll have a stop in Damascus for lunchBiking the Creeper Trail (on your own) then bike the second half into Abingdon.

The Creeper Trail is made up of two distinctly different section. Damascus is the geographic boundary between the Blue Ridge Mountains to the east, and the Ridge and Valley region to the west. We'll discuss how this geographic interface has allowed the Virginia Creeper Trail to develop these two different personalities and we'll bike both of these sections so you can see for yourself why the Virginia Creeper Trail is so popular with people from around the world.
